Mobile Internet
| Having an internet connection available on my laptop when we are away with the van not only keeps us in touch with friends, family by email, it comes in handy for 'Googling' the location of the next site we are planning to move to. |
| Apart from selecting a general area to visit we rarely have a pre-set holiday plan, and more often than not, we use 'remote', tucked away sites such as caravan club CL's or camping and caravanning club CS's rather than main sites. Because the roads and territory we are travelling in is usually unfamiliar to us we normally pre-plan our routes and destinations on an Ordinance Survey map. We find it's nice to fetch out 'old' OS maps and take trips down 'memory lane' re-discovering the places we have been in the past! | |
The internet is also useful for checking out locations using Google satellite imaging so we have an idea of the local terrain so get not 'nasty' surprises on arrival. Surfing the net to find out what events might be on locally during your stay at your current location is very handy. How many times in the past did you find out about some local event you'd like to have gone to, but today is 2 days too late!
We spent a month holidaying in the van in and around London for Christmas 08/09, and using the internet, we managed to book tickets to a few shows online rather than attempt to turn up at a theatre 'on spec', hoping to get tickets for that night's show. Not only that, but we also managed to get a discount on some tickets by booking online!
